The Wrestlerhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1125849/ Finally got around to seeing this one. If you haven't - it's about an aging wrestler trying to make a life for himself outside the ring. Kinda based on stories from some wrestlers of days gone by. If you like dramas at all, this is definitely worth watching. Hey - the movie made Rowdy Roddy Piper cry. Reasons to see it: Darren Aronofsky directed it. You know - Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain? Yeah - the guy that directed those movies. (of those three Pi is the weirdest, RfaD is just pure awesome in every way, Fountain is a cool mindblowy experience) Mickey Rourke - see another example of why this guy is considered one of the best actors of his generation (he may have staked out his own corner of crazy town, but we know that Gary Busey is still the mayor) Bonus: ya know that wrestler move where they cut their forehead to bleed in the ring? Ya - Rourke does that - for reals. Marisa Tomei - awesome actress we fell in love with in 'My Cousin Vinny' plays a stripper. I know, she's two years older than I am, but she looks a lot better in a g-string. Lucky for us her nakedness in this flick is not destroyed by a naked Philip Seymour Hoffman. Did I say she could act? Yep. Still got it. Reasons not to see it: can't think of any. The way that Aronofsky filmed this puts the viewer right into the middle of the scenes - as if you are standing right there watching it all happen. Handheld cam, tight shots, not a crapton of camera shake to remind you that it's handheld. Lighting appropriate to location instead of making everything "blueish" to try to evoke some emotional color response. Pretty good pacing of the story, no absurd cuts. Seems more real-life in many ways, I guess because it doesn't tie up everything into a neat little package of resolution and redemption by the end of the movie. It's more like real life - messy.
