Extracthttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1225822/ A light comedy about a man who owns an Extract plant, has marriage problems, employee problems, criminal drifter problems, annoying neighbor problems, plus he hires a gigolo to seduce his wife (clean his pool, so to speak), and has a hirsute Ben Affleck as his bartender. From writer/director Mike Judge, the mind that brought us Office Space, Idiocracy, Beavis and Butthead, and King of the Hill - which automatically put it on my watch list. And, being a Mike Judge movie, it didn't get the marketing it probably deserved, just like all his other movies never did either.
Stars Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, some other recognizable folks, and Gene Simmons.
It's a sit back and just watch sort of comedy. It has moments that make one chuckle, perhaps one or two that gets a guffaw or chortle, maybe even a loud "oh!" preceding a short laugh. Kind of a, "OH! Heh heh heh" Probably better watched with others to share the funny. Because, you know, usually comedies are funnier when more than one person is watching. Something about sharing the laughter makes comedies better, I think. It makes a good popcorn light-comedy night movie. It would qualify for rent-worthy if you're stuck for a movie to rent.
Don't watch this expecting another Office Space or Idiocracy. It's a much lower key flick than those. The humor and flow of the flick is paced similar to the way Office Space works, but doesn't seem to be an attempt to recreate Office Space, which is good.
And it is actually one of the few movies I didn't mind that Ben Affleck was part of the cast either, which is rare. Usually Ben Affleck in a flick indicates I don't wanna see it, which is self-filtering advice I should have listened to before watching Daredevil. I made an exception because Mike Judge is behind it. Sort of like the Kevin Smith exception that Affleck gets in my book.
Tangential Bonus: Office Space - the original Milton animated short from 1991 that inspired the live-action Office Space movie:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-o2HXVNdwc Props to Stephen Root (Milton) and Gary Cole (Lumburgh) for capturing the voice and feel of the animated characters.
So what have we learned? Extract is amusing enough to be worth watching at some point. Worthy of rental if you like Mike Judge's work. Office Space : if you haven't seen it at least once you should see it. Idiocracy: if you haven't seen this at least once you must see it. now. do it. it's got electrolytes
